The Village of Winnetka, IL, which passed a hard-fought ban of coal tar pavement sealers in 2014, tonight will honor two outgoing trustees for their service to the Village. Properly listed among their accomplishments to make Winnetka a better place was the ban of coal tar.
Richard Kates and Arthur Braun, along with the majority of their fellow trustees, stood up to the national pressure of the PCTC lobby, statewide industrial lobbyists, and local applicators to pass the ban. The review made by the Village from staff to committees to Village Board was as robust and as thorough as I have seen with not only deeply-committed citizens, but also trustees well-educated in science, politics and law.
Congratulations to these two men for their service. Thank you.
