40 Brave Minnesota Sealant Applicators Take the Pledge to be Coal Tar Free

This just in from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) who is working to phase out the use of coal tar sealants both by encouraging bans of the harmful substance as well as asking applicators to voluntarily stop its use. I wanted to give credit to those applicators who have made this pledge by mentioning them here. This is the first time a group of applicators have stood up and taken such a position.

Who will be the next to step up?

After this list is an email from the MPCA with additional information and links.

Welcome to MPCA’s inaugural Great Lakes-wide e-mail update.

We have included you because of our recent contact on coal tar sealcoat phase-out efforts or your general interest in stormwater news from MPCA.  We anticipate using these e-mail bulletins to distribute project information 2 to 4 times a month.  Please forward as you see fit, or if you wish to unsubscribe from this topic, you may do so by clicking the link at the bottom.

Our primary purpose is to provide information and tools to homeowners, parking lot managers, or community leaders interested in reducing the environmental and human health hazard of the high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content of coal tar-based pavement sealcoats.

To get distribution started, we have set up a Great Lakes portal page on the MPCA site.  From there, you can link to location-specific resources through the Minnesota page or to other states’ (or provinces’) pages as they come on line.  Through the Minnesota page, you can access more of the tool-level detail via a Google site.  Materials there are fairly specific to Minnesota but are readily adaptable for others in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.  MPCA staff can facilitate your adaptation of these materials through 2014.

Here’s a sampling of the information available:
>NEW TODAY!  Guidance to property owners on effective use of alternatives, through a Minnesota subpage http://www.pca.state.mn.us/ckkfkud
>The list of Minnesota contractors pledged not to apply coal tar (updated weekly), through the Minnesota page http://www.pca.state.mn.us/ahx9qrk
More contractors outside the Twin Cities area will be added soon.  A similar list for Wisconsin is under development.
>Who’s phased out coal tar sealcoats, through the Great Lakes page http://www.pca.state.mn.us/h8udqd6
>Project metrics and progress report through “Project and Metrics” in the links box on the Minnesota page

Once again, welcome, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information.
